Director Peter Whelan | Evangelist James Way | Sestina Music

Soprano Hilary Cronin, Sarah Keating, Charlotte Trepess | Alto Beth Taylor, Francesco Giusti | Tenor Chris Bowen, Guy Cutting | Bass William Gaunt, Malachy Frame | Musical Director, Sestina Mark Chambers

The St Matthew Passion was composed in 1727 during Bach’s extraordinary Leipzig period, and has endured as a titan of the Baroque repertoire. A revival of the piece in 1829 by Felix Mendelssohn, describing it as “the greatest of all Christian works”, sparked a broader movement of interest in Bach’s music which has stood the test of time. This powerful and moving work is brought to life by the IBO and the voices of Sestina, under the artistic direction of Peter Whelan.

Florilegium: St John Passion, J. S. Bach

Wimbledon Choral, Florilegium and international soloists perform J. S. Bach's masterpiece under the baton of the choir’s Music Director, Neil Ferris.

St. John Passion is the older of the surviving passions by J. S. Bach. It is one of the great Passions, epitomising most music-lovers idea of passion music. This is the second concert of Wimbledon Chorale’s Triptych of Passions.

The concluding concert of the series will take place in Southwark Cathedral on 17 June 2023. Anna Pickard in the Times stated, following our concert in the Royal Festival Hall, that “ Wimbledon Choral…made a lovely sound – clean, clear and bright.”

Florilegium is one of Britain’s most outstanding period instrument groups specialising in music from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Ensemble Molière: Réunion des goûts

  • Performance Hall, Royal College of Music (map)

A programme that celebrates and explores the coming together of French and Italian musical styles as pioneered by François Couperin and developed by Georg Philipp Telemann. The réunion des goûts was an idea promoted by Couperin in his masterpiece L’Apothéose de Lully published in 1725 and further explored a year later in Les Nations, a four part composition dedicated to the illustration and integration of these national styles. Perhaps with a nod to Couperin, Georg Telemann capitalised on this musical trend with the publication of his ‘Paris’ Quartets. This second set of suites, published in 1738, is more a continuation of the réunion des goûts, despite the French titles and forms.

Ensemble Molière is delighted to perform at the Royal College of Music as part of the New Generation Baroque Ensemble scheme run by BBC Radio 3, NCEM and RCM.

Fernando HWV 30

Under the title Fernando, Re di Castiglia Handel began to set to music a story about a power struggle between the Portuguese King Dionisio and
his son Alfonso. However, the portrayal of a father-son conflict in the ruling house with parallels to the English situation at the time was probably the reason why Handel wisely relocated the plot to an innocuous eastern milieu and changed the names of almost all of the characters, completing the work as Sosarme, Re di Media. The remaining fragment Fernando, Re di Castiglia has never been performed in its entirety on the basis of the music sources, and we are pleased to present its premiere in London in collaboration with the Halle Handel Festival, using a new critical edition.

Opera Settecento return to the London Handel Festival following a highly successful run of Handel’s pasticcio operas with a talented cast featuring former Handel Singing Competition prizewinners.

Avison Ensemble: Messiah

Durham Cathedral Choir
The Avison Ensemble

Conducted by Daniel Cook, Master of the Choristers and Organist of Durham CathedralWe are delighted to be performing Handel's famous oratorio with the Choir of Durham Cathedral in the stunning surroundings of Durham Cathedral and under the direction of Daniel Cook, Master of the Choristers and Organist at Durham Cathedral.

Handel composed his Messiah in 1741 and continued to work on it after its initial performance, finally arriving at the version we know today in 1754. Impressive solo arias, including 'Ev'ry valley shall be exalted' and 'Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion' are interspersed with compelling choral sections telling the story of Jesus' birth, life, death, resurrection, and final victory over sin and death. And of course the rousing 'Hallelujah' Chorus is one of the most famous pieces of Baroque choral music, and by far the most widely-known section of Messiah.

Join us for a wonderful festive performance of Handel's ever-popular Messiah and enjoy this wonderfully upliftling music in the run-up to Christmas and in the splendour of Durham Cathedral.
